Hosoo Flagship Store, Kyoto

In September 2019, Hosoo opened their first flagship store in the heritage Kyoto district of Karasuma-Oike on the ground floor of the Hosoo headquarters. OEO Studio contributed to the interior design of the 275m2flagship store, while architect Naohisa Hosoo, Director of HOSOO Architecture, headed the transformation and renovation of the five-storey building.

Traditional craft techniques have been extensively applied in the interior as well as the exterior of the building. The result is a minimalistic and exclusive space that gives emphasis to the aesthetic qualities of Hosoo textiles. A bold central staircase divides the flagship store in two sections: a lounge and a retail area. The Hosoo textile collection can be viewed in its entirely in the semi-private display rooms facing small, Zen-like courtyards. Beautifully draped textiles are displayed with an earthen wall as their contrasting backdrop, offering a play of light and shadow. The flagship store additionally features a selection of luxury goods presented on custom-designed shelving. The store furnishing includes a bespoke collection custom-designed by OEO Studio for Hosoo. The pared-back collection is boldly contrasted by the Nishijin textiles used for upholstery.
