The story of Copenhagen-based sustainable design brand Mater began almost 20 years ago, with OEO Studio’s first meeting with founder Henrik Marstrand in 2005. From the outset, we explored the purpose behind his ambition to create another design brand in a world already full of products. That conversation gave rise to a clear vision: a brand committed to sustainability and circularity.
We helped Henrik shape that dream and design philosophy, and even name the brand. For the first two or three years, OEO Studio acted as creative director and brand guardian. Like any start-up, the journey demanded a steep learning curve.
In recent years, we have had the privilege of working with Mater again - this time as designers for the brand. Our collaboration includes the Compound and Lily collections, as well as the latest Terra lamp collection, all made with Mater’s patented Matek material.
Matek combines waste fibres, such as coffee shells or sawdust, with a binder made from recycled plastic or a plastic-based alternative. The result is a distinctive material with unique aesthetic and tactile qualities, opening new possibilities for circular design. Matek technology is produced exclusively by Mater.
